Patricia Robertson and Stevie Mazur will proudly represent Fort St. John and Western Canada at the 40th annual Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne – World Irish Dance Championships – in Glasgow, Scotland this month.

These championships are more than just competitions. This celebration of Irish dance, heritage and culture binds together people in Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia. It is the gathering of an extended family of dancers, teachers, parents, musicians, officials, families and lovers of Irish dance.

This cultural event attracts around 4 500 dancers accompanied by more than 15 000 supporters to cheer them on. These talented contestants are the best-of-the-best from Irish dance schools in 32 countries around the globe, and have progressed through the ranks of their perspective regions to the top in their age categories.

Patricia and Stevie are talented and fierce competitors who spend many hours each week polishing their skills, and have advanced to compete with the top Irish dancers in the world.  Winning both regional and North American national titles, these two will do their best to continue the tradition of excellence created by the past members of the Watt School of Irish Dance and make their presence known on the international stage.

FLYING COLOURS is hosting a 3 day workshop

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES WITH ACRYLIC –

Creating Abstracts with Elements of Realism

During this technique-oriented acrylic workshop, participants will be

guided through the complexities of layering and adding a variety of

media such as collage papers and texturing mediums.  Completed works

will build on photo transfers from photocopies of your own photos or

your original drawings or sketches. Photocopies of text may also be

used.

Do you have an original poem to incorporate in a piece?  You

might consider shrinking or enlarging your photocopies.  For the print

makers in our midst, this is an excellent opportunity to incorporate

some of your favorite prints into a mixed media piece.  With plenty

of one-on-one guidance, personal development is encouraged while

creating abstracts with elements of realism into your paintings.

Now in its second year, the monthly Spread the Word Open Mike showcases local writers and poets. Our first year culminated in the publication of DiVerseCities, an anthology of twelve writers from the North Peace. Whether you write or just want to listen, please join us!

7:30 pm, April 10, $15 at the door (all proceeds go to the musicians)

Retro Relics 10140 100 Ave FSJ

Echoes of Mississippi John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis can be heard in the guitar, but this is no mere imitation. The sound of foot tapping and the intimate vocal brings the listener right inside the little cabin in the Kawartha Highlands, where a master storyteller spins yarns and plays guitar.

Bring your instrument and after the show, join in the jam! They have been known to go until late!

At 47, Rick Fines is a veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America.
In October 2005 Rick went to Alabama where he took first place in the Sweetgum Bottom Acoustic Blues Competition. His song “Riley Wants His Life Back” won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges!

He won the MapleBlues Award for Songwriter of the Year last year, Acoustic Act Of The Year twice (98, 99), and has received eight additional nominations.
His work with Jackson Delta (for 15 years) brought nominations from both the Juno and the Handy Awards. He has played for legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk icon Penny Lang and many others.

He toured from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic, from B.C. to NYC last year alone, bringing his understanding of blues, finger-style and bottleneck guitar.

In addition to a busy touring schedule, Fines conducts classes and workshops. For several years now he has taught fingerstyle guitar at the Haliburton School of the Arts and blues guitar at Kincardine Summer Music Festival in Ontario and Hornby Island Blues Workshop in British Columbia. He also works with kids as part of the Blues In The Schools programs in Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto and Fredericton.

North Peace Spinners and Weavers Guild

Our next meeting will be on Saturday March 20th @1:30 sharp at the Artspost. Everyone is welcome. Members will bring articles they have made for show and tell. The Guild is hosting a Workshop  March 26,27 and 28th with Michelle Boyd  a Masterspinner . She will teach spinning wool for sock knitting.

Stage North's I Claudia by Kristen Thomson and directed by Oliver Hachmeister has three performances on April 22, 23, 24. Tickets are now available at the North Peace Cultural Centre in Fort St. John, B.C. Limited seating is available. The uinique seating arrangement will bring the audience closer to the performance but reduces the number of potential tickets to only 100 per show. Do not wait to pruchase your tickets.

I Claudia is performed with masks donned by a single young actress. Karleigh Smith, a well-known dancer in the community, is the only performer in the show playing many different roles. Karleigh is 15 years old and attends Bert Bowes School. She has been in a number of plays with Stage North and has won numerous awards in dance.

Original music for the show will be composed and recorded by Dayna Manning, one of Fort St. John's accomplished musicians. Director Hachmeister said, "We are fortunate to have such talent in Fort St. John. To have original music for a Stage North theatre performance is something new and exciting." Stage North is extending the reach of live theatre to include local musicians and combining two exciting art forms. "Three art forms when you include the masks," said Hachmeister.

“I Claudia” is about a precocious teenage girl, Claudia, who finds refuge from her parent’s recent divorce in the basement of her school. She relates her experiences, both hilarious and heartfelt on this difficult journey of discovery to adulthood. Along the way, we meet her absent-minded grandfather Douglas, who would not mind taking another spin around the block, her father’s new finance, Leslie, who wants everything just perrrrfect for her wedding day, and the immigrant school caretaker Drachman, former artistic director of the National Theatre of Bulgonia.
